Engineering
“Engineering - the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences. The term engineer originated in the eleventh century from the Latin word ingeniator, meaning one with ingenium, or the ingenious one. Leonardo da Vinci bore the official title of Ingegnere Generale. His notebooks reveal that some Renaissance engineers began to ask systematically what works and why. The Industrial Revolution, and later the advent of World War II, led to a rapid expansion of the engineering sciences. Today we reside in the Information Age, and many engineering occupations have become multi-disciplinary endeavors.”
- The TSA Website Design Brief
Engineering is a concept that has existed for several millennia. Some of the first applications of engineering were used by Stone Age people in designing makeshift homes for themselves. As time progressed, however, engineering and its applications evolved as well. Now, in the year 2014, engineering has advanced to the point where we can build structures that are not even affected by natural disasters, plants that yield several times more food than before, and chemicals that can perform wonders. Engineering today is something that our stone age ancestors could not even have dreamed of. There is so much to engineering that there are even different fields. Five of them are listed below. Click on each to learn more about that specific type of engineering.
